Medina Library now open

The Medina Library opened to the public January 12, 2008. Opening day a record door count was set at over 6,000 patrons and the circulation count was double any previous records at nearly 10,000 items checked out in just seven hours.

The Medina Library incorporates the original library, built in 1907 and an addition built in 1976 into the new library.  Nearly 20,000 items were added to the collection and new convenient services, such as 24-hour pick up lockers and self-check out machines.  With this expansion, study rooms, comfortable seating areas and group meeting rooms provide gathering places for people of all ages.

The library was completed in 29 months, and on budget at $20.4 million. Nearly $500,000 in private donations paid for the addition of a fireplace reading area, a stained glass mural, featured artwork by local and Ohio artists an active observational beehive in the children’s area and educational toys for children.

Voters in Medina County approved a replacement operating levy in November 2007 which will allow MCDL to continue providing excellent library service in new and improved Libraries. The Medina Library is the fifth library to open as part of a county-wide library construction and expansion project funded through a $42 million bond issue.  The Highland Library will open in March 2008, wrapping up the project.
