MCDL News & Notes MCDL Mourns Loss of Fiscal Officer MCDL Fiscal Officer, Kelly Conner, passed away Wed., Feb. 22, at her home after a brief battle with cancer. Kelly joined the MCDL Finance Department in March 2020 as the Deputy Fiscal Officer and was appointed Fiscal Officer by the Board of Trustees in July 2021. Kelly’s expertise was vital in sound fiscal planning through the pandemic, in the culmination of the library’s bond issue, and to the creation of the new Strategic Plan. Director’s Notes by Julianne Bedel Summer means driving with the windows down and the music up. It can be a time for family and friends, travel, picnics, and making some of the year’s best memories. There can be so much to look forward to that this time of year seems to ring with potential and hold unlimited promise for the season to come. Lengthening days and warm summer nights might remind you of years past. What are some of your favorite warm-weather memories? As a child, in my family it meant camping, lots of time to play out in the yard with sisters and cousins, and the hope that our mom might take us swimming when she came home from work. Listening to Mom read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe aloud was great fun, even though we were old enough by then to read to ourselves. Regular trips to the library – and summer reading club – were also a part of our family routine. Having stacks of library books and time to stay up late at night wrapped in stories are core summer family memories for me. As you go about planning the next few months, I hope you’ll keep the library as part of your summer adventure. For children, pleasure reading is an effective way to fight summer slide as well as to connect to the idea of reading as entertainment – not just homework. Although, I’d say that idea really isn’t limited to youth. Less screen time and more “page time” could be a great summer goal for all of us. Please check with any librarian for great suggestions for summer reading and audiobooks to start your family off on your summer adventure. Congratulations Graduates Congratulations to MCDL Human Resources Manager, Jenna Elswick, and Medina Library Reference Supervisor, Dan Holahan, on their graduation from 2023 Leadership Medina County programs. Jenna represented the Signature Class and Dan represented the LEAD (Leadership Exploration and Development) Institute. 2 Summer StoryWalk® StoryWalk® is a partnership between MCDL and: • Medina County Park District, Carolyn Ludwig Mugrage Park, 4985 Windfall Rd., Medina • Medina City Schools, Northrop Elementary, 950 E. Reagan Pkwy., Medina It promotes literacy, physical activity, and spending time together as a family. Each season brings a new story. Watch for If You're Happy and You Know It by Jane Cabrera on June 1. I want to remind people of the great and profound joy that can be found in stories, and that stories can connect us to each other, and that reading together changes everybody involved. – Kate DiCamillo

The program attracts CEOs, officials, and management from both the public and private sectors. The class will engage in eight months of sessions covering topics including state judiciary, small town resurgence, and civil discourse. The group will develop a class project to improve upon a problem facing Ohioans. “I’m pleased to be appointed as a 2023 Ohio Leadership Fellow.
