Thank You for Your Support of Ohio Libraries

do not cut Ohio libraries

4/9/25
Thank you library patrons and community members for contacting local Representatives in the Ohio House about restoring library funding to the Governor's proposed budget levels. Your quick response and resounding support helped show lawmakers how important libraries are to Medina County, and the entire state.

On April 8, the House Finance Committee amended the budget to allocate $490 million in library funds for fiscal year 2026 and $500 million for fiscal year 2027. While we appreciate the House's efforts to adjust the funding proposal, it’s important to note that the current version of the bill still falls $90.8 million short of the Governor’s recommended funding for public libraries over the biennium. The Ohio Library Council will continue to work with lawmakers as the bill moves to the Senate. They will also keep Ohio libraries informed of any changes, which we will of course share with our patrons. “We still have concerns with the House’s version of the bill. As we move forward, we remain committed to working with the legislature and the Ohio Senate to ensure that libraries receive the full support they need to continue serving Ohio communities,” said Michelle Francis, OLC Director.

Why it's important:
The Public Library Fund has remained flat for 25 years and House Members have put forward a dollar amount that does not account for a quarter of a century of inflation.

In Medina County, the Public Library Fund covers 40% of all MCDL operations. The remaining 60% is from local property taxes passed by voters like you.

What we have done:
MCDL supporters inundated local House members with emails and phone calls requesting the restoration of the Public Library Fund to the Governor's proposed budget levels.

MCDL's Director, Fiscal Officer, and two Board of Trustees members went to Columbus on April 8 to meet with our Representatives and State Senator to discuss the importance of libraries and library funding in Ohio.

What we will continue to do:
Keep you, our patrons and taxpayers, informed as the budget moves through the Senate.

A final budget must be signed by the Governor by the June 30 deadline.
