Library Cards
Knowledge and entertainment are yours with a Library Card! There’s so much to choose from with 558,000+ items across MCDL’s seven locations and 12,000,000+ items in CLEVNET, a consortium of more than 40 public library systems. You’re sure to find something to interest and delight you.
Please bring your library card with you every time you visit the library.
Standard Library Card
Allows you to access all that MCDL and CLEVNET have to offer:
- Check out physical materials such as books, audiobooks, magazines, Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, video games, and more; up to 50 total items.
- Download or stream eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, TV, and movies.
- Use dozens of online resources.
Apply online or at any MCDL location. Applicant must be present to receive a library card. A valid photo ID with current address is required. A valid photo ID without current address must be accompanied by mail dated within four weeks. To be eligible for an MCDL card, an individual must be a permanent resident, own property, attend school, or work in the state of Ohio. A parent or guardian must sign for a minor (under age 18) and present valid photo ID with current address. A valid photo ID without current address must be accompanied by mail dated within four weeks. The child applicant must be present.
eCard
Allows you to:
- Download or stream eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, TV, and movies.
- Use dozens of online resources.
Apply online and receive your card number via email. To be eligible for an eCard, an individual must be a permanent resident, own property, attend school, or work in the state of Ohio.
3 for Me Card
Allows children ages 11 and under to:
- Check out three children’s books.
- Use the library computers.
- Access eMedia and online resources that require a library card.
Apply at any MCDL location. No ID or parent/guardian signature is required. This card can only be used at MCDL locations. Holds cannot be placed. A child may have a 3 for Me Card in addition to their standard library card.
Teen Card
Allows teens ages 12 to 17 to:
- Check out three books.
- Use the library computers.
- Access eMedia and online resources that require a library card.
Apply at any MCDL location. No ID or parent/guardian signature is required. This card can only be used at MCDL locations. Holds cannot be placed. A teen may have a Teen Card in addition to their standard library card.
Temporary Card
Allows adult new residents (without proof of current address) and temporary residents to:
- Check out three physical items. (Cannot be used to check out: Adventure Passes, Tools & Tech, video games, or Wi-Fi Hotspots.)
- Download or stream eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, TV, and movies.
- Use dozens of online resources.
Apply at any MCDL location. A valid photo ID and address are required. The account may be converted to a standard, full privilege account once proof of current address is provided. This card has a hold limit of three items and expires after six months.
Educator Card
Allows educators to:
- Check out print material, audiobooks, and circulating baskets only; up to 100 total items.
- Borrow MCDL materials for a longer loan period of 28 days. Material from other CLEVNET libraries is subject to the owning library’s loan period.
Apply online or at any MCDL location. To qualify for an Educator Card, a person must be 18 years of age or older, and:
- Provide educational services as a teacher, homeschool educator, daycare provider, or group leader.
- Maintain a personal library card from any CLEVNET library.
- Present a valid photo ID with current address.

Loan Periods (Policy PUB-02f)
- MCDL audiobooks, books, and CDs may be borrowed for 21 days.
- MCDL DVDs, Blu-rays, magazines, video games, Wi-Fi Hotspots, Tools & Tech, and new books may be borrowed for 14 days.
- Most MCDL items automatically renew up to five times, if there are no holds on the item and your account is not blocked. Automatic renewal does not apply to eMedia.
- If an item cannot be renewed or has reached its renewal limit, you will receive a courtesy notice by phone, email, or text the day before your materials are due.
- Materials owned by libraries other than MCDL may have different loan periods.
Fines and Fees (Policy PUB-06)
- MCDL materials do not accrue late fines. Exception: Wi-Fi Hotspots, Tools & Tech, and Adventure Passes.
- Lost or damaged items will be charged a replacement fee.
- Materials owned by libraries other than MCDL may have different fines and fees.
Borrowing Privileges (Policy PUB-02d)
- An account is blocked and borrowing privileges are suspended if you reach maximum checkouts or owe $10.00 or more.
- If fines and fees total $25.00 or more, the account will be sent to a collection agency after 21 days. A non-refundable $10.00 fee will be added. Borrowing privileges will be suspended until the balance is fully paid.
Account Status (Policy PUB-02e)
- Replacement cards cost 50¢. Report a lost or stolen card immediately. A library card is similar to a credit card; you are responsible for any financial costs associated with it.
Interlibrary Loan (Policy PUB-13)
MCDL participates in a nationwide interlibrary loan system through Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). Patrons can use this service to request library materials that are unavailable through CLEVNET. Get started with a request by calling 330-725-0588.
- Requests for material may have fees up to $15.00, depending on lender policies and availability.
- The process takes approximately 30 days from request to checkout, but this can vary depending on the lending institution.
- Interlibrary loan items check out for 3 weeks with no renewals.
